Ressence · TYPE 3 Black
The movement in detail
The movement’s idea
In a photograph, the TYPE 3's graphics seem to sit right on the outside of the crystal. This is no screen: mechanical discs rotate beneath the domed sapphire, and the upper chamber is filled with oil. Because oil and glass refract light similarly, depth becomes harder to perceive, producing an unusually crisp display.
The architecture has two sealed sections. A customised automatic 2824/2 base calibre sits below; the upper section, holding 3.75 ml of oil, houses the rotating ROCS 3.6 module. That distinction matters: calling the entire mechanism a wholly new, fully proprietary Ressence calibre would misdescribe it.
How does motion cross the barrier between the chambers? Ressence uses magnetic transmission: movement from the minute axle reaches the display module without a conventional mechanical connection passing through the membrane. Seven compensating bellows respond as the oil expands. The small gauge on the dial indicates the temperature of the oil inside the watch, not the ambient air.
Practical meaning
The TYPE 3 Black has a 44 mm titanium case, 15 mm thick, and a stated 36-hour power reserve. Winding and setting the time, day and date are done via the caseback; there is no conventional side crown. The arrangement has its own setting routine to learn, while the short reserve means regular wear or resetting after a break.
TYPE 3 builds on Ressence's orbital display with the optical effect of oil and a magnetic link between chambers. It makes an interesting follow-up to our TYPE 1° feature: related in appearance, different in the architecture behind the front display. The maker specifies splash resistance only; this is not a watch for swimming or diving.
