URWERK UR-150 Blue Scorpion: a minute hand that jumps backwards

On the URWERK UR-150, minutes travel along an arc before the hand returns through 240° while the hour satellites rotate through 270°. Here is how this mechanism changes the way you read time.

Why it is interesting

The UR-150 Blue Scorpion deserves attention for its 240° return and satellite hours. I would check both fit and time reading in person.

Things to consider

The 43-hour reserve assumes a full wind. Dimensions and 5 ATM refer to the Blue Scorpion variant. Try-on matters for fit and reading speed.

The model in detail

Meet the watch

There is no familiar pair of central hands on the Blue Scorpion. Rotating satellites show the hour while a minute hand travels along its own scale. At the end of each hour the mechanism sends it sharply backwards, the UR-150's most theatrical moment.

URWERK describes the sequence precisely: a cam guides the carousel for 60 minutes; then a spring returns the minute hand through 240° while the hour satellites rotate through 270°. It is more than motion for its own sake: after the jump, a new hour is ready to travel along the minute scale.

The Blue Scorpion uses the automatic UR-50.01 at 4 Hz with a 43-hour power reserve. That can cover a day off the wrist, but not a long weekend. If you rotate watches regularly, you will reset the display more often than on a model with three days of reserve.

Details and limitations

The steel Blue Scorpion case measures 42.49 × 52.31 × 14.79 mm, with a titanium caseback. The 52.31 mm length matters more than a rounded diameter: it takes considerable space along the wrist. Its unusual shape also makes an in-person fitting worthwhile.

This version is pressure tested to 5 ATM and has an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and screw-down crown. Those are Blue Scorpion specifications, not a blanket description of every UR-150; case materials and colours can differ across variants.

Reading the time requires some practice: find the current satellite and align its position with the minute arc. That may frustrate someone who wants the time instantly at a glance. If mechanical kinematics interest you, the returning minute hand is the main reason to watch this model.

Official images show the geometry and blue accents, but cannot tell you whether the watch is comfortable on your wrist. I would check fit first, then try reading the time while moving. The UR-150 is valued for its display and architecture rather than universal convenience.
