Louis Vuitton Monterey: a ceramic pebble with a mechanical heart

A crown at twelve, black ceramic and the in-house automatic LFT MA01.02. Monterey revisits the unusual 1988 LV II silhouette and shows why Louis Vuitton deserves attention beyond the Tambour.

Why it is interesting

A strong design alternative to familiar round watches, with a distinctive silhouette and in-house automatic calibre.

Things to consider

37 mm does not mean thin: 12.1 mm excluding the crystal. Water resistance is 30 m, the back is closed and reserve is 45 hours.

The model in detail

Meet the watch

Monterey is recognisable by its top-mounted crown and rounded case without conventional projecting lugs. Black ceramic frames a white dial with red accents. Its character is closer to a small design object than a scaled-down sports watch. Shape catches the eye before the name on the dial.

The 37 mm diameter is compact, but thickness is 12.1 mm excluding the crystal. Imagining a flat dress watch would therefore be misleading. During a fitting, look from the side and consider how the case volume works with wrist and cuff. Owners accustomed to large divers may find the proportions unfamiliar.

The automatic LFT MA01.02 runs at 4 Hz with a 45-hour reserve. Its rotor is 18-carat rose gold, although the closed steel back keeps the finishing out of sight. The attraction is the combination of an in-house calibre and expressive case. Buyers shopping primarily to admire a movement have better-suited alternatives.

Details and limitations

Sapphire, a leather strap and 30 m water resistance suggest urban use. It makes sense to protect the ceramic from impacts, particularly at its edges. Red stitching echoes the dial; even a superficially similar replacement strap could substantially alter the composition.

Louis Vuitton’s Netherlands regional page lists €23,000. This is a market-specific price; confirm availability and your final quote with an advisor. Monterey makes sense for original form and a design that stands apart from familiar round watches. Technical versatility or a long reserve offer a weaker justification for the price.
