Hautlence A82: the hour sphere turns as the minute hand returns

The Sphere Series 5 shows hours on a titanium sphere rotating on three axes. Its minute hand crosses a 180° arc and returns to the start; the hand-wound A82 runs for at least 72 hours.

The essentials first

In one minute

CalibreA82; manual winding; 3Hz; 160 components

Why it is interesting

The complication changes the act of reading time: the sphere and returning minute hand give the two indications different motions.

Things to consider

A 17.4mm height is substantial for a rectangular watch. CHF 72,200 excludes VAT; the initial Mexico launch does not establish availability through other retailers.

The movement in detail

Every hour, a brief mechanical rearrangement takes place in the Sphere Series 5: the white sphere presents the next numeral while the minute hand returns to the beginning of its semicircular scale. There is no conventional hour hand. Four conical gears on two crossed shafts set at 21° control the sphere’s three-axis movement. At the hour change it travels approximately 450°, a complete turn plus another quarter.

Behind this is the hand-wound A82, beating at 3Hz with a minimum 72-hour reserve. The calibre comprises 160 components; hairspring manufacture and assembly are linked to H. Moser & Cie. The retrograde minute hand travels across a 180° sector: after 60 it snaps back to zero in synchronisation with the hour change. This display needs transmissions and coordination that an ordinary three-hand watch can do without.

October’s Series 5 develops the existing Sphere construction in white rather than introducing a new base calibre. The Grade 5 titanium case measures 37 × 45mm and 17.4mm high including the crystal, with 10 ATM water resistance. A sapphire minute track carries three-dimensional Globolight markers. The edition comprises 28 watches, officially priced at CHF 72,200 excluding VAT. Mexico receives the first 30 days of the launch, with additional green and red suede straps supplied for that market’s edition.
