Audemars Piguet · Royal Oak Minute Repeater Supersonnerie
The model in detail
Meet the watch
A titanium Royal Oak with a smoked green dial conceals a minute repeater. It tells the time acoustically on demand, using a mechanical display rather than an electronic speaker.
A repeater sounds the hours, quarters and remaining minutes in sequence. This calls for coordinated hammers, gongs and activation machinery as well as accurate counting. Unlike an alarm, it is not designed to sound at a preset time.
Supersonnerie refers to the acoustic construction. A separate resonating membrane helps transmit the gongs’ sound. Case material alone is not the explanation: the whole system matters, so a photograph cannot establish superiority in loudness over every rival.
Details and limitations
Hand-wound calibre 2953 contains 362 components, runs at 3 Hz and provides a 72-hour reserve. There is no automatic winding. Wearing it does not replenish energy, leaving the winding crown part of the everyday ritual.
The 42 mm case is 14 mm thick. Royal Oak’s sporty architecture should not mislead: water resistance is only 20 metres. It is more compelling as a portable acoustic mechanism than as an all-purpose sports watch.
