Ressence TYPE 8: €18,000 for a watch with a moving dial

The TYPE 8 retains only hours and minutes while changing how they are displayed. Its convex titanium dial works with the ROCS 8 orbital system; setting and manual winding are controlled through the caseback.

Why it is interesting

The TYPE 8’s strongest quality is design discipline. Two indications are enough to create a fully independent character.

A 36-hour reserve and splash resistance limit versatility. Learn the caseback controls before purchasing.

The model in detail

Meet the watch

The TYPE 8 has no conventional pair of hands above a stationary plane. The hour indicator travels with its disc, gradually changing the composition. Cobalt blue unifies the elements into one surface: the first impression is graphic rather than jewelled.

The motion comes from ROCS 8, driven by the minute axle of a customised 2892/2 base calibre. It is automatic mechanics with a 36-hour reserve. Visual simplicity does not mean simple construction; it means choosing not to turn a complex transmission into visual noise.

The Grade 5 titanium case measures 42.9 mm across and 11 mm thick. Domed sapphire continues the dial’s curvature. There is no crown: rotating the caseback sets the time and also provides manual winding. This control method deserves its own demonstration before purchase.

Details and limitations

The brand’s website lists Cobalt Blue at €18,000 including VAT. The appeal is coherence: case, typography and kinematics serve one idea. For a collector with several traditional models, the TYPE 8 could add more visual novelty than another variation on a familiar chronograph.

The compromise appears when rotating watches. After a break from wearing it, the 36-hour reserve may require resetting. The manufacturer specifies splash resistance, so water activities are best left to another watch. The TYPE 8 makes particular sense as a quiet city watch for someone who enjoys watching time move.
