Chopard L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25: eight days behind a single jump

Four barrels give the hand-wound L.U.C 98.06-L a 192-hour power reserve. The anniversary Quattro Spirit 25 jumps the hour in its lower aperture, while a single hand indicates minutes on white Grand Feu enamel.

Why it is interesting

An unusually good match between a long power reserve and a dress-watch role: eight days let you rotate watches without winding before every outing. The clean dial makes the jumping hour the main event.

Things to consider

The hour indication can only be advanced forwards. Read the setting instructions first; the familiar habit of turning hands backwards does not work here as it does on an ordinary watch.

The model in detail

Meet the watch

The L.U.C Quattro Spirit 25 has just one hand, and it indicates the minutes. The hour appears in an aperture at six and jumps when the hand passes the top of the dial. That brief event captures the watch’s character: a quiet exterior reveals the work of a complicated mechanism once an hour. Reference 161977-5001, with white enamel and rose gold, belongs to the 2021 anniversary series created for Chopard Manufacture’s 25th anniversary.

This display changes the habit of reading a watch. Instead of the angle between two hands, the eye combines a large hour numeral with the position of the minute hand. Placing the aperture at the bottom prevents the hand at twelve from obscuring it at the instant of change. It is a thoughtful arrangement for someone who enjoys watching the hour turn. Those who recognise the time instantly from the outline of a conventional pair of hands will need a little adjustment at first.

The white dial uses Grand Feu enamel: actual enamel here, rather than the name of a lacquer colour. Black minute numerals and a railway-style track leave the centre almost empty. A single gold-toned hand looks sufficient against that background; adding a calendar would quickly disturb the balance. The official photographs make particularly clear how much space is devoted to the dial surface. A prospective owner should examine it under different lighting: a photograph communicates the design but cannot replace seeing the enamel’s lustre in person.

Details and limitations

Behind the restrained face is the hand-wound L.U.C 98.06-L. Its four mainspring barrels form two coaxial pairs, with a stated power reserve of 192 hours, or eight days. Meanwhile, the balance retains a frequency of 4 Hz. For an owner, the practical meaning is straightforward: a fully wound watch can spend the working week off the wrist and still be running. That autonomy is especially relevant here, because a dress watch or a watch for special occasions is often not worn every day.

A large energy reserve does not, however, make the Quattro Spirit 25 automatic. It needs manual winding, and its remaining power is indicated on the movement side, through the transparent back. That placement preserves the clean face but requires removing the watch to check it. The movement measures 4.85 mm thick, while the case is 10.30 mm thick and 40 mm across. This is convincing packaging for four barrels, although the broad, pale surface can make the watch look larger: diameter alone cannot settle the question of fit.

There is more to the back than the indicator. Striped bridges and careful finishing are complemented by the Poinçon de Genève, or Geneva Seal. Its rules address origin, construction, workmanship and testing of the completed watch; treating it as merely an attractive engraving would be a mistake. Nor should this model automatically be credited with COSC certification: its official specification names the Poinçon de Genève. For a buyer, that is a reason to examine the back as carefully as the enamel front.

One operational detail is better discovered in advance than a minute before leaving home. According to Chopard’s instructions, the hour indication is advanced forwards; turning the crown anticlockwise adjusts only the minutes, with a protective lock operating at midday. Pulling the crown out stops the balance. Setting therefore calls for following the manual rather than relying on habits formed with an ordinary three-hander. The brown alligator strap and gold pin buckle reinforce the dress-watch character, and the leather should be protected from liquids and cosmetics.

The original series comprises only 100 pieces. That narrows the choice of individual watches, but does not in itself promise rising prices or easy resale. The Quattro Spirit 25 makes most sense for a collector who already knows why they want a jumping hour and appreciates a restrained presentation of a complication. My strongest argument for it is coherence: the display, clean dial and weekly winding routine support one idea. The principal compromise is giving up conventional versatility for that very specific character.
