Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT: easy time-zone changes, strict strap rules

The Pelagos FXD GMT adjusts its local hour hand independently, while the MT5652-U offers 65 hours of reserve and Master Chronometer certification. Its 42 mm titanium case with fixed bars establishes the main compromise: a conventional bracelet cannot simply be fitted.

Why it is interesting

A compelling travel GMT for those already happy with textile and fixed bars. Its strongest argument is the independent local hour hand, rather than the aviation insignia.

Things to consider

Fixed bars rule out conventional two-piece straps and a standard bracelet. The bidirectional 24-hour scale does not replace a diver’s minute bezel.

The model in detail

Meet the watch

The most useful detail of the Pelagos FXD GMT reveals itself after landing: its local hour hand can be moved in one-hour steps without disturbing the minutes or reference time. For someone who genuinely crosses time zones, that is more persuasive than an aviation badge on the strap. The model arrived in 2024 for French Naval Aviation. In the current catalogue we examine the green textile M2542G267NU-0002, which preserves the direct, almost service-issued character of the FXD family.

The orange hand makes one revolution per day. It can stay on home time or follow the original aviation brief by indicating UTC, known as Zulu time. A bidirectional 24-hour bezel lets the wearer check another zone. Technically that provides up to three zones, but the third requires deliberate reading against the rotated scale. There are not three separate dials here. For an everyday trip I would choose the straightforward pairing of home and destination, bringing the additional scale into use only when needed.

FXD refers to the fixed strap bars. They are formed with the case, so there are no conventional spring bars. It is a logical solution for an instrument, but imposes a very specific limitation: an ordinary two-piece strap or standard bracelet cannot simply be fitted. A compatible pass-through design is needed. If you enjoy switching between leather, rubber and metal to suit your clothes, accept this characteristic in advance. Buying an FXD with plans to turn it into a conventional all-rounder would be an odd starting point.

Details and limitations

The titanium case measures 42 mm across and 12.7 mm thick, with a 22 mm strap fitting. The case itself uses grade 2 titanium and the back grade 5. The matt metal suits the utilitarian appearance, but the dimensions do not promise an unobtrusive fit. Textile running beneath the case also contributes to its perceived height. When trying it on, I would check how its edges sit relative to the wrist and whether the strap needs excessive tightening for stability, rather than rely on a head-on photograph.

The self-winding MT5652-U has an integrated GMT function and a silicon balance spring. More important here than the marketing term “manufacture” is Master Chronometer certification. The model is specified as tested for precision, water resistance, reserve and resistance to a 15,000-gauss field. TUDOR states a range of 0 to +5 seconds per day under the certification requirements. That is a useful, verifiable benchmark, not a reason to promise every owner the same wrist result: wearing habits and the condition of the individual watch still matter.

Power reserve is 65 hours. Taking a fully wound watch off at 18:00 on Friday and putting it on at 09:00 on Monday leaves 63 hours, giving a small arithmetic margin against the stated reserve. A partial wind can easily consume that margin. The practical benefit is fewer resets of the date and second time zone with regular wear. In a collection where each watch appears once a week, 65 hours cannot fundamentally prevent stopping; it is a useful reserve, not a substitute for paying attention to winding.

On the matt black dial, the orange GMT hand is clearly differentiated from the main hands. Night-time indications are separated too: the hour markers emit blue light, while the 24-hour hand and bezel scale glow green. This grouping helps identify which elements should be read together. In daylight, beige luminous material gives a softer, slightly retrospective appearance than cool white. That is a matter of taste: some will enjoy the restrained palette, while others may prefer the stricter monochrome of a conventional modern instrument.

Despite the Pelagos name and 200 m water resistance, this version’s bezel serves time zones rather than elapsed diving minutes. It rotates in both directions. The GMT should therefore not be chosen as a direct replacement for a diver with a unidirectional minute scale. The green one-piece strap and titanium buckle underline the same specialisation: this is an everyday companion for travel and active environments, rather than an attempt to look equally convincing with a wetsuit, a business suit and an evening jacket.

To my mind, the Pelagos FXD GMT is particularly good at being clear about its terms. The independent local hour hand delivers genuine travel utility; fixed bars and textile demand agreement with the format. French aviation history adds context, but I would make the buying decision without it: do you need this particular kind of GMT, and are you happy living without a bracelet? If both answers are yes, its functions form a coherent character. If not, attractive insignia will not solve the everyday mismatch.
