Grand Seiko 9SA4: why a wagtail lives inside the calibre

A hand-wound 5 Hz calibre with around 80 hours of reserve. Grand Seiko rethought the winding assembly and shaped one component like a bird, whose movement is visible as the crown turns.

Why it is interesting

The 9SA4 offers a good reason to look through the back more often. A little wagtail moves during winding, with substantial movement redevelopment behind that small detail.

Things to consider

Try the 38.6 mm SLGW003 if you are used to large watches. Do not force the crown further after a full wind. An Australian catalogue price does not establish availability in Uzbekistan.

Component 01

Bird-shaped click

A small lever prevents the ratchet wheel turning backwards during winding. Grand Seiko shaped it like a wagtail. As the crown turns, its motion recalls a pecking bird—a functional component becomes part of the winding experience.

The movement in detail

Grand Seiko's 9SA4 has manual winding, a 5 Hz frequency and around 80 hours of power. Two barrels work with the Dual Impulse Escapement. But the best introduction to this calibre starts elsewhere, with a small component in the winding assembly.

The ratchet-wheel click is shaped like a wagtail. As the crown turns, the bird seems to peck at grain, visible through the back. Grand Seiko says almost 40% of the base movement was reworked relative to the 9SA5, with the click sound and winding feel specifically tuned. This beautiful touch grew out of a working component.

An example is the SLGW003 in Brilliant Hard Titanium: 38.6 mm in diameter and 9.95 mm thick. The official Australian page lists A$16 500. That price belongs to that market; availability and purchase cost in Uzbekistan need separate confirmation.

You choose this sort of movement when winding a watch is as enjoyable as wearing it. Do not turn the pleasant ritual into a contest with the crown: the instructions prohibit forcing it once fully wound. If you want to put on a watch and think about it as little as possible, an automatic is more convenient.
