Hamilton Cushion Mechanical: hand winding in a 30 mm case

Hamilton has brought back the cushion shape of 1926. The H36109720 has a slim 30 × 30 mm case, a hand-wound H-42 with a 57-hour reserve and a £935 price at the UK store. Its calibre is based on the ETA 7001, an important part of this release's story.

Why it is interesting

An interesting, relatively affordable format by Swiss mechanical-watch standards: a small case, a slim hand-wound H-42 and convincing 1920s styling.

Things to consider

The 30 × 30 mm size needs a fitting; the H-42 is based on the ETA 7001, and 57 hours do not bridge Friday evening to Monday morning.

The model in detail

The return of a shape

The Cushion Mechanical does not try to look large. Squared numerals, a warm pale dial and a small seconds hand at the bottom bring the pocket-watch era into wristwatch proportions. Hamilton introduced the series on 1 October 2026, referencing its Cushion Plain and Cushion Engraved of 1926. This review focuses on the H36109720 with a black leather strap.

What is inside

Inside is the hand-wound H-42, new to the collection. Hamilton explicitly states its base: the ETA 7001, a descendant of the Peseux 7001. This is a modern development of a familiar slim movement, rather than a wholly in-house design. The stated reserve is 57 hours, with a Nivachron hairspring to reduce the influence of magnetic fields.

Slimness matters more here than headline numbers. The steel case is 30 mm wide and high, and 8.1 mm thick; lug-to-lug length is 34 mm and strap width at the lugs is 16 mm. The manual movement helps keep this profile. The watch may look small on a broad wrist, so it is worth trying the 34 mm version alongside it: a photograph cannot replace a wrist fitting.

Everyday wear

57 hours sounds generous for a hand-wound watch, but does not cover every break. Friday at 20:00 to Monday at 08:00 is 60 hours; even a fully wound spring falls three hours short by the stated figure. If you wear it on weekdays, you will return to the crown regularly. For someone who enjoys the ritual, that is part of the appeal.

There is sapphire at the front, a display back and 5 bar water resistance. Through the back, you can see the H-42 without an automatic winding rotor. It is a neat everyday watch on leather; the case's water resistance does not make the strap suitable for swimming. Another advantage is a profile that slips more easily under a cuff.

As of 4 October 2026, Hamilton's UK website lists the H36109720 at £935. That is a UK-market price. I like the straightforward proportions: this release chooses a compact case and manual winding, without trying to appeal to fans of large sports watches.
